Distances in Quito

In Quito, especially the Old Quito, there are many signs like this one to guide the tourists. To please the Americans (they're probably the only ones not being metric!), they put distances in miles, right besides indications in metres. The logical imperial unit would have been feet. As you can see on this sign, 0.01 mile equals anything between 10 and 17 metres. Not to mention the inconsistency of the location of the arrows. Of course, everyone knows how long is 0.01 mile, right? ;-)
